Hilton Papagayo Costa Rica Resort & Spa

My wife and I just returned from an 8 day stay at the Hilton Papagayo. With this being our first trip to Costa Rica as well as an all inclusive resort, I tried not to have any preconceived expectations. I knew that Costa Rica had a great reputation for it's beauty and friendliness and was excited to see it's natural beauty. Being a frequent user of Hilton brand hotels, I was prepared to experience a possible lowering of my past great experiences with this chain, especially after reading a few of the prevoious reviews. I can say unequivically that I was not disappointed at all in my stay.

The staff at the hotel seemed to bend over backwards to be friendly and to help in any way possible. There appearded to be a genuine concern from everyone I met that we were pleased. When I was experiencing an issue connecting to WiFi, the staff at the front desk helped to walk me through the problem until we were able to solve it. One night after a long hot day of tours, we came back to a warm room due to AC issues. Within 5 minutes of calling maintenace, they had someone in the room who ending up replacing the thermostat for us on the spot.

The food at the hotel was good to excellent at each restaurant for each meal. Keep in mind that this is an all inclusive resort so I didn't expect a gourmet meal at each sitting. The Bocicello (sp?) was our favorite for dinner and the grill by the spa had great smoothies and sandwiches.

The resort itself is pretty spread out so be prepared to walk or call for a shuttle for those really long hikes. Their response was quick and again "friendly" so we never waited long for a ride.

After our return, my wife and I definitely plan to return and the Hilton will be our first choice for accomodations.

“We Loved It”

My wife, our 8 year old daughter, and I just got back from spending a week at the Hilton Papagayo and absolutely loved it. It is not set up like the typical hotel. Rather, it has bungalows spread through out the hill side overlooking the ocean (bay). The set up really works as the grounds are very tropical and beautiful. The hotel provides shuttle services through out taking you from point A to point B at the push of O on any phone. Surprisingly, the shuttle typically arrives within a few minutes. The room was updated, spacious, and very comfortable. We had 433 and couldn't have been any happier. Ok, the restaurants- the El Dorado is the best in our opinion. It requires reservations. I would give it a B+. The La Conchea offers buffet breakfast and buffet dinner with a lunch option as well. La Conchea; breakfast - A+, lunch - C+, dinner - B -- it really depends on the theme that night (italian was awesome). La Bocadillo; lunch - B-, dinner - did not eat. Bar; C - typical bar food with the pizza being the best option in my opinion. The drinks were all very good - no complaints. The beach wasn't bad. It wasn't the white sand we all love; however, the water was very clear. You can snorkel right off the beach. The pools were clean and for the most part always had plenty of seating available. Our daughter really enjoyed the Kids Zone and participated in several activities the offered.......by the way, Karen is the BEST. Absolutely everyone we encountered were very nice, polite, and accomodating. We will be back for sure!!!! Also, don't forget to use Issy's Tours for any tour you are considering. We did the Aerenal Volcano tour and Loved It.

We had a great experience at this hotel. Food was just ok however We loved the breakfast. This hotel has a lot of steep hills but there are shuttles all around. There is plenty of wildlife to see as well. I recommend this hotel.

“Great Service- Very Happy Honeymoon”

Just got back from our Honeymoon trip June 1- June 7th. I was very happy with the quality of service I received from everybody at the Resort. My wife and I took advantage of the all inclusive drinks and spent lots of time around the pool and main bar. 80% of the time there was a fresh drink in front of me just before I finished the one I was working on. I received better drink service here than in the States where the bartenders depends on tips for their earnings. I still tipped of course, but these guys were on it. Even when we moved down to the lower deck away from the bar, they would make rounds servicing our table. I read a few reviews about the drink may be watered down. I still don't know where I stand on this as I was able to get drunk just fine. If they are watered down, they are just slightly because taste wise the drinks were just the same.

The food was pretty good. I say pretty good because I think what happens is you get tired of eating from the same places. They have 2 restaraunts that require dinner reservations and a buffet, but they all kind of taste like they are prepared from the same kitchen. That being said the dishes were still well prepared and would of been more than happy with them if I went out to eat in Houston.

The location is absolutely beautiful. The Resort is built on hills that overlook the bay and the grounds were better than I expected. They have a shuttle system that takes you to your room and you get some great views of the area. There is some wildlife in the area as well, we woke up hearing a howler monkey in the morning. There was also something running around our roof the first night we were there.

Overall I would recommend this location to anyone interested in visiting Costa Rica. I was nervous at first obviously because there were lots of choices and we were spending a pretty penny on our trip, but was rewarded with a great pick. We did 3 excursions, two with Swiss Travel(they have an office onsite) and one from "Amazing Larry" I would recommend using either one of these for your tours. Amazing Larry walks around the site, he's a skinny guy with a baseball cap and his tours are a little cheaper but just as good. We did the River tour with him and the Mega Combo Tour and White Water with Swiss.

The Hilton is an "all-inclusive" hideaway that is second to none in Guanacast, Costa Rica. The accomodations were wonderful, and the food was great. We especially loved the El Dorado restaurant. Although reservations are required at two of the specialty restaurants, there is no extra charge. Because the "bungalows" are spread out throughout the hills of the resort, there was constant "oversized" golf carts that would come by and pick you up to take you anywhere in the resort.

The entertainment staff did a great job with setting up snorkeling, kayaking and biking, right from the hotel beach, free of charge.

The entire staff was very friendly and we felt safe walking all over the property at night.

Overall, this was a wonderful vacation and a beautiful place to stay!

I just got back from this resort with a friend from school. We went just the two of us and we both absolutely LOVED it. The location was beautiful and it's not a typical hotel set up. There are little villas spread out across the property. There are private villas and ones split into two rooms. They are all very quiet and clean. There are insects but that's how it is there. I got used to this fact very quickly and and did not bother me after about a day. The rooms feel much more private and homey than a typical hotel room. They hotel is located right on the gulf of Papagayo which is absolutely beautiful. The water is warm and clean. The beaches are not huge but they are definitely adequate. They have beautiful black volcanic sand. There is also a gorgeous infinity pool for those who don't appreciate the aquatic life.

Because of the large and hilly property they have shuttles to get you around more quickly. The drivers were all very friendly, accommodating and professional (they also have great driving skills since the roads are so narrow!).

All the staff were absolutely wonderful. They were very friendly and knowledgeable about the country and the Guanacaste province specifically. All of the activity coordinators spoke near perfect English (which helps a lot when you're first there) and they bring their own personalities to the activities they facilitate. The activities provided are varied: bike tour outside the hotel (so much fun!), kayak tours around the bay, hiking on the trails on the property, cocktail lessons, Costa Rican cooking lessons, aqua fit aerobics, dance lessons, karaoke, giant jenga etc. There is also a kids central area and a wide variety of kids activities for the little ones.
There are staff from many different regions of Costa Rica as well as different countries in Latin America. Talking with them about their different countries was a great experience in itself. Their energy and presence made the experience that much more enjoyable!

The food was quite good. I enjoyed the restaurants on the resort more than the buffet. The food is much better than other Caribbean destinations I had been to. The best meals I had were the ones off the resort and they were all typical Costa Rican dishes. Leaving the resort is a must for day trips!

This hotel was a perfect launching point for day trips. Costa Rica has so many activities to do and sights to see. We zip lined, rock climbed, white water tubed, went horse back riding, had mud baths and went in the hot springs, did a river boat tour and saw the amazing wild life, went to shopping districts, and snorkeled. All these experiences were absolutely wonderful. There was so much more we could have done! (ATV, sea do, volcano hike etc)

Although the hotel offers a travel company we did all of our day trips through the local small companies on the beach. We used Guana Trans first for our zip lining day and that was the best day of our trip. We met up with Alejandro and John on the beach and booked right away. Being two young girls we were skeptical at first but they were totally professional and it was the best day trip of the vacation! John is very well educated and so hospitable. He makes everyone on his tours feel perfectly at home and comfortable.

We also went through Issy's tours for the boat tour and the snorkeling/shopping trip. The boat tour was fantastic but I did not feel our guide was as knowledgeable or personable as John. Both those tours are a must, but I would go with Guana Trans if I had to do it over again.

All in all this was a very positive experience and I would go back in a heart beat. We didn't want to leave! Whether you're going with friends, your spouse/loved one or your whole family this destination will deliver! I would also definitely consider it for a wedding/honeymoon destination.

“Awesome stay at Hilton Papagayo and tours from Mardigi Tours”

My wife and I took our 3 adult daughters to the Hilton Papagayo and had an amazing holiday. The location was beautiful. Rooms were comfortable. Food was fantastic. The best part of the resort were the staff. We were not pushed in to activities, but there was always something fun to do; beach volleyball, soccer, pool volleyball, dancing, and so much more. I must say the young people running the activities were a joy.

While in Costa Rica we exclusively used Mardigi tours on the recommendation of a friend, and they made the trip outstanding. There service was extraordinary and went well beyond any other tours we saw. I would easily rate Marvin and Digi as the finest tour guides I have had or seen. I very much hope to go back to this resort and use their services again.

The first impression lasted throughout the stay, it was a great experience. We (my wife and I) stayed for 7 nights (the last week of May), which is the very beginning of the rain season. The lobby is very welcoming with a tropical breezeway design and the resort bungalows are spread out in the hills of the resort area. The transportation within the resort has been taken care of and it is easy to get around. Just pick up the phone and dial 0 for the free shuttle service. One of the attractive parts of this resort is the design with bungalows and not one large hotel building. The Spa-area is quiet and peaceful and has its own pool and restaurant.

The room met the standards of a Hilton hotel. The bed and linen were very comfortable. The rooms must have been renovated when Hilton aqquired the resort a few years ago.

The main area with the different pools and the restaurants where nicely designed and made the resort very welcoming.

Everyone we were in contact with working at the resort was professional, nice and friendly! The activity staff was always very nice and enthusiastic. We were somewhat skeptical paying for an All-Inclusive vacation before we went on this trip. This resort changed our position. The shuttle from the airport was a breeze, only 25 minutes. The drinks, food and service were great.

My wife and I had a wonderful time in Costa Rica. We came for our honey moon and it was an unforgetable experience. We stayed at the Hilton Papagayo Hotel in the Guanacaste province of Costa Rica. The hotel provided excellent service, comfort and made us feel at home. We also went on an exciting and fun filled day of tours with the Issys Tour Company. We were able to go on a horseback tour which was scenic and had incredible views of a local volcano called Miravalles. We also had the opportunity to relax in soothing hot spring waters and enjoy a natural mud bath which was really rejuvenating. For additional excitment, the guides we had (Esteban and Edwin) took us on a zip-line tour which was breathtaking. We went really high up into the rainforest and felt like we were flying through the trees. It was especially amazing to see monkeys and a variety of exotic birds during our canopy adventure. Esteban and Edwin were friendly and very helpful during each part of our tour. The tour bus was also very comfortable and in great condition which allowed for a smooth travel experience. I high reccommend the Issys Tour Company to anyone who wants to have a safe, fun and enjoyable experience. Thank you guys for making our honey moon so special and memorable.

We just returned from 7 days at the Hilton Papagayo. We were a group 0f 34 people attending a wedding. It was truly a wonderful stay and everything was amazing. The buildings and grounds are well maintained and there are lizards, birds and monkeys everywhere for everyone to see. The staff at the hotel are very friendly and there seems to be about two or three staff for each guest.
The rooms are bungalows are clean and spacious with large bathrooms. We were a family of four and were assigned rooms 300 and 301 right next to the spa. What a great location! We opened the door between our two rooms to create one huge room. It was wonderful!
The restaurants are what most people have been saying: They are good but not the best. I found the buffet restaurant to be hit and miss but all the others were great. The best food by far on the resort is at the Del Fuego Spa Restaurant. We had almost everything on the menu at the Del Fuego but the best were the Mahi-Mahi Burger, the avocado salad and the veggie quesadilla. The Del Fuego also offers an assortment of great smoothies which can not be missed. Only problem with the Del Fuego is it closes at 4:00 p.m.
Great Service but questionable alcohol: The bartenders were the best… my glass never went below half full! Somehow each time I placed my glass on the bar, it was quickly filled! The alcohol at the Hilton could be questionable because the draft beer and local booze might be watered down. One night early in to our stay, I had a dozen glasses of draft beer and four or five tequila shooters and went home straight! This happened to a few others I know which left me wondering. The following night we started drinking canned beer and ordering premium alcohol and everything returned to normal.
I will not repeat what everyone else has said about the Papagayo but I will offer my own hints and tips if you decide to go:
1. The gift shop is very nice but overpriced. Take a 20 minute taxi ride to the tourist area of Coco beach to buy your t-shirts, gifts and souvenirs. Book a taxi in the hotel lobby for $50.00 and split the cost with your friends. Give your driver your approximate return time and he’ll be there waiting!
Coffee and cigarettes can also be purchased at the grocery store in Coco Beach. Bags of coffee at the Hilton gift shop are $11.50 but at the Coco Beach grocery store the top quality brands are between $5.00 and $9.00. Marlboro lights are $3.50 a pack at the gift shop and $20.00 a carton at the grocery store.
2. Book excursions from the sellers on the beach. The trips are more personal and cost much less! The hotel offered us a half-day fishing excursion for $600.00 while the seller on the beach offered the excursion for $350.00 for four people. Not only was the trip cheaper but it was awesome! We all caught mahi-mahi and had them cooked for us at the Spa Restaurant. Our group also did the zip-lining, volcano tour. River tour and golf. The guys from Izzy tours are great!
3. Wildlife on the resort is abundant. Lizards, birds and monkeys are everywhere. I counted more than 100 varieties of birds and saw five types of lizards. If you want to see howler monkeys, listen and look for them in the trees behind bungalows 355 to 384. They are there and I saw them almost every day.
4. If you like mangos, Costa Rica is the best place in the world! I was amazed by all the mango trees on the way from the airport to the hotel. Mangos are everywhere and they are fresh and abundant! Mango juice and fresh cut mangos were available every morning at the buffet. I got hooked on mangos while I was there and tried to get my fix on my return to Canada but it just didn’t work. Three week old Mexican mangos are just not the same
In all my years of travelling, I have never been to the same place twice. We all had such a great time at the Papagayo that we might return for an encore next winter.

“Beautiful and Relaxing”

My wife and I had a very enjoyable and relaxing time here. The location is very convenient - 25 minutes from the Liberia airport. The rooms were very nice, and each had a balcony with a view. Landscaping was beautiful, with many varieties (with labels) of trees and flowers, including some that were very exotic and totally foreign to a temperate-zone resident. The main pool is beautifully designed, with multiple areas on different levels flowing one into the other, a walk-in, zero-depth entry, a swim-up bar, and a separate, shallow, elevated area perfect for lying in the water with a cool drink. The staff was very friendly and accommodating; the service was probably better than average for a tropical area, but don't expect it to match U.S. standards - that's not how things operate in this part of the world, so just relax.
Having eaten at all of the restaurants, we would recommend El Dorado for a nice white-tablecloth dinner, well-prepared and flavorful (no supplemental charge); we did not care much for El Bocadillo, which was much more ordinary. However, the buffet was extensive and varied, with a lot of local dishes - try them! Our only complaint was the wine list, which was very limited (extra charge except for the house wines, which were not very good).
As others have noted, the beach has a lot of dark, fine sand and can be hot; however, despite the color it is not muddy and rinses off readily - and 20 or 30 feet out, the water is very clear with good snorkeling (equipment included) right off the end of the beach.
One warning: the site is compact, but hilly, so if you have trouble walking and don't want to depend on the hotel shuttles (available on call to/from any room), try to stay as close as possible to the beach.

“Great Vacation”

Just back from staying a week at this wonderful hotel. Absolutely have no complaints. The staff is really friendly in the entire resort and it is just a beautiful property. Lots of wildlife too. We heard the monkeys but never saw them at the resort.

The resort was not crowed, so there was never an issue getting reservations at the two restaurants requiring them. We found the buffet good as well. We found the drinks plenty strong as also. Wine with dinner is nice.

The shuttle service is very fast with friendly drivers. We stayed at the top of the hill in the 400 buildings. They had a beautiful view. Walking the resort isn't bad, but we chose to walk down the hill only, never up. What's vacation for anyway!! And as I said, the shuttle service was fast.

Both pool areas were nice and and as stated the spa area is for adults only.

Don't be afraid to use Izzy Tours out on the beach. They provide the same service as Swiss Travel, the hotel's contracted tour company that services all the major hotels, but a little more personalized with Izzy.

We will go back.

“LOVE!!”

We stayed here for three days, left and stayed at a place in in the Arenal ares, and came back to finish our vacation with another 3 days.
The first three days we stayed in an awesome room with the best location on the resort grounds. It was super close to everything. Loved it. I requested the same room for our return stay. I was told we could have it. Of course, though when we came back we couldn't have the same room, despite my begging:( instead we were put in one of the rooms that I dreaded because of its location. It was pretty far away from everything. And up a HUGE hill. Huge!! However, the inside of the room was exactly the same as the first time which was great, AND they offered transportation to everyone staying in the rooms that were far from the main areas of the resort. All we had to do was call on one of the phones on the grounds and a little car quickly came to pick us up. Loved that!!
Aside from not getting the room we really wanted on our return visit, we loved this place!! seriously can not say enough good things about it. The rooms were very contemporary, and clean and the beds were really comfortable. The staff was awesome! all the bar tenders were really friendly, speaking english and spanish. all of them talked to us when we were at the bar. Being there for so many days, we got to be buds with the bar guys. Loved them! The resort has little activities that you can do for free. The staff leads the activities, they are all really knowledgeable and fun and friendly.
The food was great too. It was a good mix of local and non local. They had a really great variety. I never got bored of the food. Also, if you want to eat healthy, it's totally no problem., There are tons of fruits and veggies to choose from!
All of the drinks are great too. This was my first time at an all inclusive, and I was super impressed at the quality of the drinks. They all had good amounts of alcohol in them, and they were super tasty.
100% I would recommend this place to anyone.

“Amazing trip, amazing experience”

My husband and I vacationed to this hotel through Apple Vacations and had a fantastic time. We are fairly low-key and really enjoyed spending our time by the adult pool area and restaurant which happened to be right next to our room. We never had a problem getting chairs or drinks. Our room had an ocean view and was very comfortable. We never had a problem getting a shuttle and made sure to call if we were in a bit of a hurry. We had very good food with only 1 mediocre evening meal. We attended several excursions that were close by including ATV tour and ziplining.....both were worth the money! The staff at the hotel were always friendly especially Pablo and Stephanie. The rooms were clean and comfortable. The hotel feels very intimate with the layout of the bungalows. We enjoyed a massage right on the beach. My only complaint is that I wish it were on a better swimming beach but otherwise had a very nice trip....definitely would go back.

“Fantastic Vacation”

The Hilton Papagayo is fantastic. We rented the 2 bedroom oceanfront suite and were very happy with the wonderful breathtaking views from the large balcony/patio on the back of the villa. Very clean with nice travertine floors and a walk in shower (3 bathrooms). The living room had a pull out sofa so I had a room for each set of family. Wife and I in one room, the two boys in another and my two girls in the last.
The Kidz Paradise was great for the kids and they loved all of the events from sand castles to face painting to different arts and crafts. The staff for the Kidz Paradise knew our kids names (we were there for 7 days) and went out of their way to be with them.
The whole staff was very friendly and helpful from maids to bartenders to waiters. They all were there to help and did. It made it nice to be there and comfortable.
There were many animals which our kids loved. I cannot name them all but monkeys, iguanas, birds, raccoons, bats, stingrays, rooster fish and more were all there to see at the hotel running around or swimming. We also spent a lot of time in their pools playing with other families.
Lastly, the food was very good and drinks (including alcohol) were included with the hotel rate. We were worried about the all-incliusive, but it was quality and tons of choices even for our 2 year old.
I recommend this hotel and you will have a great time with good memories.
