LIR Airport General Information

The Daniel Oduber Quiros International Airport (LIR) is Liberia, Costa Rica's airport and gateway to some of the most spectacular and exclusive destinations in Costa Rica. Each year thousands of visitors use LIR Airport as the entry point to Costa Rica's northwest coast attractions and destinations. By the end of 2009 more that 500,000 visitors would have started their pleasure or business trip at LIR Airport.

Located minutes away from Costa Rica's most priviliged coast line LIR Airport offers and excellent alternative to the busy Juan Santamaria International Airport (SJO) in San Jose.

Located in northern Costa Rica, the Liberia International Airport or the Daniel Oduber Quiros International Airport lies in Liberia, the capital of Guanacaste province. Set up mainly to cater to those tourists who wish to enjoy the wonderful weather and great beaches of the North Pacific Coast, the Liberia International Airport sits some 217 km northwest of the capital city San Jose.

Fast becoming a major international airport exclusively for tourists who want to enjoy Costa Rica’s gorgeous Pacific coastline, arriving at the Liberia International Airport is the quickest way to reach places like Tamarindo, Playa Negra, Golfo de Papagayo, Playa Grande, Playa Flamingo, Playa Hermosa and the Marino Las Baulas National Park.

Named in honor of the former president of Costa Rica, Daniel Oduber, whose idea it was to build an airport in the region and who was an avid supporter of expansion and development in Guanacaste, this international airport was opened in 1995, with its first commercial flight arriving here from Miami, Florida.

Built on the Llano Grande plains, some 8 miles west of the city of Liberia, the Daniel Oduber International Airport is a full service airport with paramedical services, technical services, fueling services, a fire department and luggage handling services. Besides the usual airport facilities, there is a bank, restrooms, medical assistance and a snack bar on the airport premises as well.

Currently undergoing renovations to accommodate more international arrival and departure flights, the airport has increased its aircraft ramp to hold 4 planes, as well as build 2 new buildings to house more passengers.

By arriving at the Liberia International Airport, you can catch a short domestic flight to the airstrips of Samara, Tamarindo or Punta Islita, or you can visit the nearby national parks of Santa Rosa and Guanacaste. For those who are traveling on a budget there are many hotels in the neighboring area of the airport as well as along the highway that leads from Liberia to the coastal towns of Playa Panama, Playas del Coco, Papagayo Gulf and Nosara.

Liberia International Airport, Guanacaste.

Second most important airport in Costa Rica.

Daniel Oduber International Airport(LIR - Liberia international airport code) better known as Liberia Airport was inaugurated in 1995 and it is located approximately 8 kilometers from the city of Liberia ( 10 minutes driving distance) and is 220 Km (136 miles) northwest of  the capital city of San José. If you are planning on driving from San Jose to the Liberia airport it may take almost four hours to get from one airport to the other it will depend on weather and traffic conditions. Below you will find a detailed route map made by a GPS system that will guide you when driving from one airport to the other.

This is a very important airport  for Costa Rica and it features a great variety of services, such as: migration office, an emergency medical technicians department, refueling service, a fire brigade department, bank services, telephones, internet, sanitary facilities, restaurant and cafeteria. In addition to this, only a few minutes from the airport you will find hotels, car rental agencies, tour operators, taxi service, banks, restaurants, domestic and international flights services. The airport of Liberia is very small with only a couple of buildings as its terminal area so it´s very simple to get around.

Arriving to the Liberia International Airport is an excellent option if you wish to visit places like Tamarindo, Golfo de Papagayo, Flamingo, Playa Potrero, Playas del Coco, Playa Samara, Ocotal, Punta Islita, Santa Rosa National Park, La cruz, Arenal volcano, Palo Verde National Park, the Ostional Reserve, Rincón de la Vieja National Park, the Guanacaste National Park, Monteverde, Nicaragua, and many other places of interest that are either in Guanacaste Province or in the neighboring areas.

The airport of Liberia in Guanacaste  is a very good option if you’re planning a trip to Nicaragua, since it is located only one hour and 30 minutes away from the border with this neighboring country. The area of the border is called Peñas Blancas and it is very interesting to do a short trip of a couple of nights to the beautiful Colonial city of Granada. The total expenses of crossing this border is less than nine American dollars per person and very few countries require a visa to entry Nicaragua.

Presently the Costa Rican government is planning to increase the area of the air terminal, which will give a better service to the high amount of tourists and locals, who day by day choose Guanacaste as one of the best destinations in Costa Rica.
