WELCOME TO MANUEL ANTONIO!

One of the most visited tourist destinations of all Costa Rica National Park and Reserve System.

The Manuel Antonio National Park is a small biological peninsula found within an area devoted to different productive activities, such as agriculture, cattle and high tourism development. It is one of the country’s most scenic and beautiful national parks. The mean annual temperature is 27°C, with a minimum temperature of 20°C.

Our park habitat consist of primary and secondary forest, the most characteristic species of flora in the primary forest are guácimo colorado (luehea seemannii), pilón (hieromyna alchomeoides), cedro maría (calophyllum longifolium), guapinol blanco (hymeneae courbaril), surá (terminalia oblonga), guapinol negro or stinkingtoe (cynometra hemitomophyla), lechoso (cow tree/brosimum utile), cenízaro (pithecelobium saman)and ceiba (silk cotton tree).

Of its most important fauna we find the raccoon, coatamundi, agouti, two-toed sloth, the white-faced and squirrel monkey.

You can also enjoy the beauty of beaches like Espadilla Sur, Puerto Escondido and Manuel Antonio.

Manuel Antonio offer the uniquely breathtaking fusion of scenic mountain beauty and an active lifestyle. From championship surf tournaments, hiking, rafting/kayaking, canopying, bird watching or sport fishing, Quepos and Manuel Antonio offers something for everyone.

MANUEL ANTONIO NATIONAL PARK!

With the establishment of ManuelAntonio National Park in 1972, the people of Costa Rica decided to preserve, for future generations, one of the most beautiful and bio-diverse areas in the world. Although it is the country's smallest national park, the stunning beauty and diversity of wildlife in its 683 hectares is unequaled.

Manuel Antonio contains a charming combination of rain forest, beaches and coral reefs. This beaches are the most beautiful in the country, lined with lush forest, and the snorkeling is excellent too. The forest is home for sloths, iguanas, the rare and adorable squirrel monkeys and millions of colorful little crabs. And the trail that winds around Punta Catedral affords some spectacular views. The park is easy to reach, south of the town of Quepos, and is near a good selection of hotels and restaurants.

Visiting the park, one is treated to an abundant diversity of wildlife. Cathedral Point, with its forest topped cliffs was once an island, but is now connected to the coast by a thin strip of island. This land bridge now forms the spine separating the parks two most popular beaches, Playa Espadilla Sur and Playa Manuel Antonio.
The southern facing beach, Playa Manuel Antonio, is a picturesque half mile long, white sand crescent bisecting deep green foliage to one side and a private, secluded cove to the other.

Standing with your feet dug into the sand and watching the wave crash against the rocks on either side of the lagoon, it is easy to believe that you are a thousand miles from anywhere.

Manuel Antonio National Park

(682.7 h. of land 55.000 h. of sea)

This park is just south of Quepos on the Pacific Coast, 132 km from San José. Perhaps It is so popular because of its expensive white sand beaches backed by an evergreen forest that grows right up to the high tide line. The principal habitants are primary forest, secondary forest, mangrove swamps, lagoons and beach vegetation. There is quite a varied fauna with 109 species of mammals and 184 of birds. The park includes 12 little isles just off the coast; these are a number of dolphins and, at times, migrating whales can be observed. More...

Quest for Quepos

Manuel Antonio's Hidden History

Ponce de León, the Spanish explorer, whose futile search for the Fountain of Youth became his signature expedition, is rarely recognized for one of his greatest discoveries - Quepos and Manuel Antonio - which he put on the charts in 1519.
So abundant are the riches of Costa Rica's Central Pacific coast, that he might have found his fabled fountain had he gone ashore and explored the region's.

Manuel Antonio

Province: North Puntarenas

Manuel Antonio is one of the most exclusive areas in Costa Rica, however budget hotels can be found. It started out as a tiny village that had a beautiful National Park, Manuel Antonio National Park, next to it. As the park started to become more known more hotels started springing up. Because of Manuel Antonio’s size, or lack of size, hotels started building on the road to Manuel Antonio and many started taking advantage of the magnificent panoramic views. Soon very exclusive hotels arrived, thus bringing us to present day Manuel Antonio, however budget hotels can be found but most are found down near the beach. More expensive hotels have loftier, breezy perches and most offer off season rates. Many hilltop hotels may have steep steps; inquire. It can be a tough, hot walk back up the hill from the beach if you don’t want to wait for the bus, however this does run every half hour.

The National Park is small only 682 hectares however it epitomizes everything tourists flock to Costa Rica to see: stunning beaches, a magnificent setting with islands offshore, lush rainforest laced with a network of easy to walk trails, and wildlife galore. There is good chance that you will see monkeys (howler, white faced, and possibly squirrel monkeys), sloths, and coatimundis. Scarlet macaws do frequent the area however you may need a bit of luck to see them.

Despite Manuel Antonio’s size, it is one of the country’s most popular parks, with as many as 150,000 visitors annually in recent years. A few years ago the deluge of visitors threatened to spoil the very things they had come to see. Park Director Jose Antonio Salazar believes the park can withstand no more than 300 visitors a day. In 1994, the Park Service began limiting the numbers of visitors to 600 per day (800 on Saturday and Sunday), and the park is now closed on Monday. If you wish to do your bit to help preserve Manuel Antonio, consider visiting in the “green” or wet season. Litter and pollution are additional problems, pack out what you pack in.

Nonetheless, the park is too small to sustain a healthy and viable population of certain animals. If the monkeys do not have access to areas outside the park, the population will decline because they cannot breed. Corridors that allow the animals’ access to areas outside the park have been taken up by hotels, so that the park has, in recent years, become an island. As a result, the squirrel monkey (mono titi) population is declining. Fortunately, in 2000, a decree was issued to triple the park’s size to just under 1800 hectares, almost tripling the size of the park.

Manuel Antonio National Park

Manuel Antonio National Park, lying on the pacific coast 7 kilometers south of the town of Quepos between Damas and Matapalos, was created in 1972 at a time when the area was poised for massive tourism development, founded primarily by foreign interests. The land constituting the park had, by then, gone through several different foreign owners. Today, the park protects a beautiful remnant piece of the tropical forest that once covered a wide variety of marine life.

With one of the most stunning, picture-postcard backdrops in the country, this is one of the lushest places in Costa Rica, with spectacular white-grey sand beaches fringed by thickly forested green hills. There is a huge variety of things to do- walking the Park's easy trails, whitewater rafting, ocean cruising, horseback riding, fishing, sea kayaking, to name but a few.

Manuel Antonio is one of Costa Rica's best known and most often visited park, despite the fact that it's also the smallest. The park is an island of verdant wildness in a rapidly developing area with a relatively intact wet tropical forest and abundant wildlife.

This park has a remarkably long list of species inhabiting it: brown pelicans, brown boobies, tyrant hawk-eagles, gray-headed chachalacas, solater's ant bird, coatimundis, two and three toed sloths, toed anteaters, ocelots amongst others.

Welcome to Manuel Antonio
Between the Rainforest and the Beach

Within a relatively small corner of Costa Rica, tourists can find the excitement and adventure of a vacation in the tropical forest, surrounded by one of the country?s most beautiful natural environments, without sacrificing life?s modern conveniences. There?s a magic to Manuel Antonio that is hard to explain. One thing, however, is absolutely certain: once you?ve been here you?ll want to come back again.

Manuel Antonio, with its 1700 acres of land mass and 135,906 acres of marine reserve, is the smallest of the 20 national parks Costa Rica has put aside for total protection. Even so, it is the country?s second most visited conservation area, after the Poas Volcano.

Last year alone, 143,520 tourists visited the park. Conservation officials have fixed the park?s carrying capacity at 600 people per day from Tuesdays to Fridays, and 800 on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays. On Mondays the park is closed to the public. ?If there are already 600 visitors at 10 a.m., we close it right then?, said Javier Herrera, in charge of environmental education at the park, which is usually open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Located 100 miles south of San Jos?n the Pacific Coast (a pleasant three-hour drive, or a short 20 minutes by plane), Manuel Antonio, which was declared a national park in 1972, is the natural habitat of species such as the endangered squirrel monkey (endemic to the area), white faced capuchin monkey, raccoons, three and two-toed sloths, white-nosed coaties, brown pelicans, black-collared hawks and green kingfishers. They share the space with primary and secondary forests, bursting with cedars, bully trees, locust ?sur?, black locusts and silk cotton trees. A mangrove swamp covers about 44.5 acres, adding to the biodiversity of the region. Three different species: red mangrove, buttonwood mangrove and white mangrove - around.

TAXI BOAT FAQ’s:
https://www.montezuma-hotels.com/images/Tours/tortuga_island_1/tortuga-island_09.jpg
I am concerned about safety, do you offer life jackets for all of your passengers?
Actually our boats are the only ones in the area full equipped with life jackets, operation permits and insurances.

Is the boat really \"rocky\"?
All depends on the ocean if the weather conditions are not good, we have to cancel the ocean operation and we help our clients to make the trip by land if necessary.

Would you recommend that passengers take medicine for motion sickness?
Is a speed boat you hardly get sea sick, the movement is back and forward not side by side.

Where do you put the luggage?
The luggage is covered with plastic bags and travel along the passengers.

Can I go and come from the same location the same day?
Only 1 daily departure available from each location for the regular taxi boat, however is you arranged a private boat just for your party you would be able to come back the same day. Other option is spending the night over then come back the following day.

I have a car rental can I leave it the Taxi Boat departure sport then pick up the following day when I return?
We always recommend to leave your car at your car rental office in Jaco, all car rentals in Costa Rica have a office in Jaco. This would be a safe place to leave your rental vehicle.

Taxi Boat Jaco MontezumaWeb Reviews about the Taxi Boat:

Speed Boat Taxi Transfer to Jaco Beach (and other destinations on request):
The trip to Jaco (Herradura) by boat is one hour. Don’t take the long way. Take our boat directly from Montezuma Beach to Jaco. You may also have the chance to see dolphins, whales and other marine wildlife. Ask about other destinations!

Taxi Boat to and from Jaco
The private speed boat, taxi boat or water taxi to Montezuma or Jaco is one of the best way of transportation in this area of Costa Rica. Saving up to 7 hours of hot and uncomfortable trip by land, the taxi boat most accurate way to get to Montezuma or Jaco.

Taxi Boat Jaco Montezuma
We ended up staying two nights here and then leaving via private taxi boat across the awesome Nicoya Gulf, ($30USD ea), for a 1 hour transfer to the to town of Jaco (which would have taken us at least 8 hours of busing / ferries to get to otherwise.

Taxi Boat
So in a few minutes we're off to taxi a “Taxi Boat” up the coast to Montezuma, which is on the peninsula on the north pacific side of Costa Rica. I've wanted to go to this area for a while now! See the image on how we'll cut across the ocean to get there. The boat is an hour instead of the many (treacherous) hours driving up the coast, and probably more scenic :)
