Playa Flamingo Costa Rica

This mile-long, crescent shaped beach, also known as Playa Blanca (White Beach), is as beautiful as any of the famed beaches in Costa Rica. Among the first of Costa Rica's beaches to receive international attention, Flamingo Beach has evolved into one of the country's most lavish areas. It is home to the nation's largest marina, and it is a favorite of deep-sea fishermen.

With its gleaming white sand, Flamingo Beach is the perfect setting for a vacation getaway. It hosts some of the most beautiful Hotels and condominiums that Costa Rica has to offer. Many gorgeous Villas dot the Playa Flamingo Beachfront, where wealthy foreigners and Ticos continue development at an astonishing rate.

Unlike many beach communities, Flamingo Beach has no village center. The community that extends east is home to exclusive beachfront Resorts and coveted private property. Thus, life beyond the beach and water sport activities is limited to a few excellent restaurants, and visitors seeking nightlife should head to the nearby town of Brasilito, or beyond.

As is the case with all Beaches in the Papagayo region, Flamingo Beach is rich in natural beauty. Mangroves are abundant in the area, and Salinas Point offers a stunning view of both the Potrero and Brasilito Bays. Not far south of Flamingo Beach is the Marino Las Baulas National Park (Parque Nacional Marino las Baulas). Established in 1990, this refuge encompasses roughly 450 hectares of coastline and mangrove swamp, and it is one of the world's most significant nesting sites for the endangered Leatherback Turtle. These giant, majestic creatures come ashore to nest between November and April. There is an informative turtle museum on site and night-tours are offered during nesting season. The park is also a great place to spot marine birds, including the White Ibis, the Blue-winged Teal, and the Muscovy Duck. Additionally it is home to monkeys, Coatis, and even crocodiles.

Daniel Oduber Quiros International Airport offers seamless travel to the region, and Flamingo Beach can be access by way of a paved road. Alternatively, the smaller airport in Tamarindo receives domestic flights from around the country, and from this airport visitors are a short taxi or bus ride away from Flamingo Beach. From the capital of San Jose, however, the bus or car ride is about six hours along the Inter-American Highway.

Tucked between the beaches of Brasilito and Potrero on Guanacaste’s Gold Coast, Playa Flamingo is famed for its inviting white sand beach and multitude of water sports. Although one of the original resort towns in Costa Rica, Flamingo still enjoys a pristine coastline thanks to careful planning and structured development. A short jaunt from Tamarindo and less than an hour's drive from Liberia’s international airport, Flamingo is popular with anglers, divers and golfers alike.

Quick Facts

Location: 47 miles from Liberia; 12 miles north of Tamarindo
Average Temperature: 75 to 96°F
Altitude: Sea level

Visitors can enjoy some of the best sport fishing on the Pacific. Experienced captains know the hotspots and help both seasoned and novice anglers pull in sailfish, marlin, wahoo and tuna.

Playa Flamingo is also home to some of the finest snorkeling and diving in the region. A number of tour companies offer half or full day snorkeling trips and dolphin watching excursions. Visitors can arrange dive trips to the clear waters near the Catalina Islands where angelfish, manta rays and the occasional sea turtle can be spotted. Local dive shops offer PADI certification for all beginner divers.

Flamingo’s warm waters and gentle currents are ideal for swimming, especially along nearby Playa Brasilito. The Potrero Grande break draws its share of surfers, though far fewer than the packed beaches of Tamarindo. Sunset cruises, horseback rides and world-class golfing are also on offer; the award-winning Garra de Leon golf course is just minutes away.

An array of shops, restaurants and modern hotels await visitors to Playa Flamingo. From beachside bungalows to posh resorts, accommodations are available to suit all budgets and tastes. Visitors in search of nightlife after a long day in the sun won’t be disappointed as Flamingo’s handful of lively bars and casinos offer something for everyone.

Flamingo Activities

ATV Tours

Tackle the bumpy rainforest trails and quiet unpaved roads that surround the Flamingo area on an all-terrain vehicle. Combination excursions to local canopy tours are available, making the ride there and back an adventure in and of itself.

Canopy Tours

Some of the best canopy tours in the country can be experienced just 40 minutes from Flamingo. The most popular course features eleven cables totaling ¾ of a mile in length – the longest of which lasts 35 seconds. The tour also has three suspension bridges and a wildlife farm full of snakes, butterflies and monkeys.

Casinos

Try your luck at Flamingo's brand new, state-of-the-art casino. With 21 Vegas-style slot machines, standard and electric roulette wheels, poker tournaments, raffles, cash giveaways and more, there are plenty of opportunities to win big bucks.

Dance Lessons

Salsa and Merengue dance lessons are offered nightly at many local hotels. They are free of charge for their guests but visitors can join in for $5-10 per person for a one-hour lesson.

Day Spas

Most all-inclusive resorts feature luxurious salons and day spas for the ultimate relaxation experience.  Exfoliating chocolate scrubs, organic mud wraps, couples’ massages, and pedicures are just a few of the many ways to unwind and absorb Costa Rica's 'pura vida' way of life.

Golfing

A world-class golf course designed by Mike Young is located about 40 minutes south of Playa Flamingo, at the Hacienda Pinilla Resort. Golfers will also appreciate the nearby 18-hole, par 72 Garra de Leon course at Playa Conchal.

Horseback Riding

Try a sunset horseback ride along Playa Flamingo's graceful, crescent-shaped shores. The waters are so clear that it is not uncommon to spot devil rays gliding across the crashing waves. Half-day excursions to nearby beaches like Brasilito can also be arranged.

Kayaking

Spend a tranquil afternoon paddling Flamingo's enticing blue waters, surrounded by dramatic cliffs and pristine white sands. Keep an eye out for sea turtles, rays, and flying fish while exploring the bay.

Sailing

Opulent 45 and 52-foot yachts depart from the Flamingo Marina for half or full-day outings. The journey includes a choice of kayaking, snorkeling, or dolphin and whale watching. Tours include an open bar as well as appetizers and lunch.

Snorkeling and Scuba Diving

Scuba diving and snorkeling tours are popular in Flamingo, especially during the rainy months of May- October when visibility is at its best (30-80 feet). Dive companies depart from a centrally located hotel for the Catalina Islands – a small archipelago 10-20 minutes offshore. Here, spotted eagle rays, white tip reef sharks and colorful schools of fish are commonly spotted.

Whales frequent the area from September-March, and large schools of cow-nosed and devil rays can be seen from January-March. Orcas, whale sharks and nurse sharks are also known to visit these waters on occasion. The local dive shop offers day trips and PADI certification courses.

Sport Fishing

Fish in style, both inshore and off, for sailfish, marlin, wahoo, yellow-fin tuna, roosterfish and big cubera snapper. Marlin can be caught year-round, but December through February are the best months. Private charters on well-equipped sportfishing boats are available.

Flamingo Costa Rica

Flamingo Costa Rica is located in the province of Guanacaste, just 47 miles southwest of the city of Liberia. The dry tropical scenery of the area contrasts with numerous luxurious resorts and hotels. An International Sport fishing Tournament is held in Flamingo Costa Rica every year. Besides this sport you can enjoy other water activities like snorkeling, kayaking, and jet skiing. If you want to do something a little more relaxing, you can just laze around on the soft sand and get a tan under the sun in Flamingo Costa Rica. You can also go riding on horseback along the beach or rent an ATV. From the Marina you can take a diving tour to Catalina Island or Isla Murcielago. A romantic cruise in Flamingo Costa Rica allows you to admire a mesmerizing sunset from the deck of a yacht. As soon as you reach Flamingo Costa Rica you will be stunned by luxurious villas and houses set amidst dry tropical vegetation. A few night clubs and bars, even casinos, are open late for those who enjoy nightlife. The nightlife in Flamingo Costa Rica can keep you up until the morning light.

Hotel Estela de Fuego

With a gorgeous white sand beach melting into a rolling blue ocean, the scenery of Playa Flamingo couldn't get any better. However, foreigners and wealthy ticos are beginning to realize Playa Flamingo's commercial potential and are developing the beachfront at a rapid rate. The beach community has no discernible center, and is more of a mixture of villas and resorts that extend eastward than anything else. There are a few excellent restaurants around, but if visitors are craving a nightlife, they should head to the nearby town of Brasalito, or farther beyond.  The beach lends itself toward types of sand and sea activities, and is perfect for swimming, lounging, snorkeling, and sport fishing. Not far south is the Marino Las Baulas National Park, encompassing roughly 450 hectares of coastline and mangroves. The park is one of the world's most significant nesting sites for the endangered Leatherback Turtle, which come ashore between the months of November and April to lay their eggs. There is an informative turtle museum at the park, as well as night time tours which are offered to visitors interested in observing the egg-laying process.

Hotel Estela de Fuego is located on a hill above Playa Flamingo in a spot which affords dramatic views of Potrero's Bay and the Flamingo Marina. The panorama offered from the hotel is truly unmatched, as are the ocean breezes and sunsets that grace the hotel daily. There is a small path leading to the beach, and a garden replete with fruit trees and flourishing plants, adding tropical scents and sites to Estela de Fuego's tranquil grounds. The hotel accommodations consist of ocean view mini-suites, which are extremely clean and comfortable, and include a private bathroom (with hot water), air-conditioning, telephone, and cable TV. At such a close distance to the sea, guests can relax in their rooms while listening to the waves crash and the birds sing.

A tasty joint capable of satisfying any culinary craving that may arise, the hotel's international kitchen will have guests' mouths watering and stomachs rumbling. The adjoining bar can easily take care of libations and is a pleasant spot to relax with a drink or a new friend. However, if after a few rounds some excitement is in order, Estela de Fuego runs its own casino where guests can try their luck on a variety of games and machines. The hotel also has a swimming pool that is cold and clear, and aside from the beach, is the perfect spot for beating the afternoon heat. Estela de Fuego's staff is pleasant and personable, and will gladly assist guests with planning activities or tours.
