Samara Costa Rica

Samara is perfect for soaking up sun and beach life in an unpretentious, laid-back atmosphere. The little village is set in a large half moon bay with pale sand beach shaded by palms and old fig trees.

The shallow waters of the Samara bay are protected by a coral reef and the easygoing surf makes swimming enjoyable.

Samara is a traditional weekend and vacation retreat for Costa Ricans and still feels fairly authentic with many businesses and hotels run by local Ticos. It's a perfect family destination and seems especially popular with travelers from Europe.

Samara's main drag leads directly down to the beach where seaside restaurants and bars feature sand floors, beach arts, and mellow tunes.

Several good dining options are available in Samara, along with bars and lounges, and the lively discotheque of Samara is also located right on the beach!

Hotels in Samara run the gamut from budget cabinas, to cozy B&B, boutique hotels and vacation rentals.

Activities in Samara

2 km south of Samara is the fishing community of Matapalo. The beach is littered with broken corals which inhabit the reef and sea bottom of the southern part of the bay. The shallow waters here are great for snorkeling.

Diving and snorkeling is also excellent at the far northern end of Samara where the reef closes up to the beach. The reef is one of the few ones found on the Costa Rican Pacific side and in dry season you enjoy crystal clear waters with schools of yellow jacks, pork fish, manta rays, and star fish, among many others.

Next to the reef is Chora Island which is home to colonies of maritime birds. With an ocean kayak you can paddle to the island and enjoy escapism on a pink sand beach.

The chest-deep water and easy surf in the bay is perfect for beginners learning to surf. More challenging waves for the pros are found 12 km south of Samara, on Playa Camaronal.

Other water sports in Samara include windsurfing, sport fishing, or kayaking along the coast or into the river estuary of the Rio Ora.

For activities on land you can ride on horseback to the Tobacco waterfalls with its three cataracts and natural swimming pools. Or go on a Canopy Tour in Santo Domingo, three km inland from Samara.

Samara

The tiny picturesque town of Samara is located 35 km south of Nicoya and 245 km west of the capital San Jose. Lying on the southern Pacific coast of the Nicoya Peninsula in Guanacaste province, Samara is known for its beautiful tropical beach, which is one of the safest and most attractive beaches in Costa Rica. Here you can find some of the best water sports activities in the entire country, as well as horseback riding, deep sea fishing, snorkeling, scuba diving, paragliding, waterfall visits and canopy tours.

A four hour drive from San Jose, you can reach this town much quicker if you arrive by plane at the Liberia International Airport and then drive out 2 hours to Samara, via Nicoya. Do keep in mind though that this tiny town also has its own airstrip for small planes. A quaint little town, Samara lies at the foot of a steep hill. The main road here leads straight into town and ends at the stunning Playa Samara or Samara Beach. This beach is a great getaway if you want a quiet holiday or if you want a fun family vacation.
If you take a left before the road along the beach, you will find many affordable hotels and restaurants located here. Plus, this road leads to the beautiful and luxurious Hotel Punta Islita and the lovely Playa Carrillo.

Samara and its surrounding environs offer tourists an ideal place to relax and have a good time. Here, a variety of exotic plants and animals can be found along the 5 km beach strip of Samara beach, along with a stunning coral reef that lies just offshore. A short boat trip away is the gorgeous and remote Isla Chora. In town, you will find everything from a supermarket to a number of gift stores, bars and nightclubs as well. An excellent place to use as a stopover for the nearby national parks and reserves, Samara is perfect for a quiet holiday or a night out on the town.

This thriving farming and fishing village is unlike any other in Costa Rica, with some of the country’s most prominent people having homes out here, such as president Oscar Arias Sanchez.

Samara Costa Rica

The beautiful coastal hamlet of Samara is a paradise on the Nicoya Peninsula's western shore. Known as one of the prettiest and safest beaches in all of Costa Rica, Playa Samara radiates wonderful white sand in contrast to the aquamarine water. Tropical plant life and living coral encompass Samara's 3-mile (5 km) coastline, and the beach is a favorite among locals, foreigners, and wealthier Ticos- forming a quintessential beach community.

Samara's laidback vibe allows for rest and relaxation, an almost universal characteristic of the Nicoya Peninsula. Its village offers a number of services: stores, restaurants, hotels, and a small selection of bars. The town's nightlife, however, can be found at one of its discos, which keeps the party trucking through early morning.

Sport fishing is a popular activity off the coast, as is snorkeling and scuba diving around the coral environments. A short one-mile (2 km) walk down the beach brings visitors to the Tico hamlet of Matapalo, a great snorkeling spot. For birdwatchers, Chora Island, which is located just off the coast, is home to swaths of avian fauna that can easily be viewed from a kayak. Finally, swimming conditions in Samara's calm coastal waters are an ideal warm temperature.

Transportation to Samara has dramatically improved with construction of the paved Road 150, which runs south from Nicoya. Air travel is available to a small airstrip just outside of town. From San Jose or Liberia, planes will fly to Nosara and then to Samara. Daily buses also run from Nicoya, Liberia, and San Jose.

Costa Rica

Lonely Planet describes Costa Rica in glowing terms.  “The waves are prime, the natural beauty staggering, the pace of life slow, the beer plentiful and the locals friendly….The country is also unique globally for its enlightened approach to conservation.  More than 27% of the country is protected in one form or another…Lush jungles are home to playful monkeys, languid sloths, crocodiles, countless lizards…and a mind-boggling assortment of exotic birds and butterflies….Then again, if you have some serious chilling to do, you can always lounge in a hammock and enjoy the pure life, or pura vida—a national expression that sums up the desire to live the best, most hassle-free existence.”

Costa Rica offers visitors an abundance of wildlife. Here are just a few impressive facts:

Costa Rican waters are home to 29 species of dolphins & whales, which make up 35% of the total existing species on the planet.

2005 International Game Fish Association’s “World Record Game Fish”—Costa Rica holds 22 All-Tackle records, 18 Fly-Fishing records, 77 Line-Class records

March—northward migration of hundreds of thousands of migratory birds along Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast

Weather & What to Pack

With a warm climate most of the year, the Samara area is known for great weather. It is reliably sunny most of the time. Because we are so close to the equator, there is no real winter here. In the dry season, we seldom have any rain. In the green season, you can expect some afternoon or evening showers, though in the tropics that is the perfect time to lounge around and read a book. Pack for warm weather at the beach. If you are also staying in San Jose or any of the highland areas, a sweater will come in handy. If you have more specific questions, please don't hesitate to contact us.
