Cultour Cultural Experience Tour and Visit to Sugar Cane Mill

Cultour Cultural Experience Tour and Visit to Sugar Cane Mill

Visitors will experience a lost piece in the past of Costa Rica and at the same time get a real understanding of daily rural life. The Cultour Cultural Experience Tour brings you into true contact with Costa Rican workers, here in the rarely-visited Arenal countryside. Experience the real Costa Rica!

This tour shows just part of one of our most important traditions and proves that is possible to live in harmony with the environment.

You will be welcomed at the terrace of La Casona, a place full a history, culture and traditions. La Casona was the country estate of former Costa Rican president Rafael Iglesias and is considered an historical landmark. After a short walk through the location, we will visit the sugar cane mill, where we will share a little bit more about sugar cane production process. The sugar cane mill is a bit more than one hundred years old!

After the visit to the mill you will receive a short lesson about taking a traditional Costa Rican coffee break! You’ll get freshly-made tortillas, homemade sour cream, cheese and true, hardy, Costa Rican coffee.

Those who desire to participate in the preparation are welcome to it and after they’ve finished we will be delighted with what you have prepared for us!

Now it’s time to jump into our tractor-pulled wagon and pass by different plantations and farms — enjoy of the scenery and then we arrive to the small town school of Sona Fluca.

You will be greeted by the students and directed to the classroom area, where you will watch traditional dance and music prepared by the students and then take a quick tour of the school.

Now it’s time to head back on the wagon to our next stop, a local farm where we will be learning about organic farming and plantations of pineapple, papaya, yucca, tiquisque and medicinal plants.

Then we’re back to La Casona where we finish up with an incredible lunch, cooked the old-fashioned way on our wood stove and served on the traditional banana leaf.

You’ll be treated to live typical songs playing by your hosts of Cultour. Proceeds of the tour go to support the scholarship programs of the local school.
